What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain used to cover the front surface of a tooth. They are designed to permanently correct stained, chipped, broken, undersized, and slightly misaligned teeth.

How Long Does It Take to Get Porcelain Veneers?

  • Your new porcelain veneers will require a minimal amount of tooth enamel to be removed from the surface of your tooth.
  • Next, Dr. Ruff will take detailed impressions of your teeth which will be sent to the dental laboratory for fabricating your new porcelain veneers. A temporary set of veneers will be worn during this time.
  • Then, Dr. Ruff will determine the proper shade of your new veneers.
  • When they’re ready, your new veneers will be placed on your teeth without any cement so that Dr. Ruff can inspect them for obvious flaws. Upon your final approval, Dr. Ruff will permanently cement the new porcelain veneer to your tooth’s surface with a dental resin. Your teeth will need to be cleaned with water and prepared with a solution that microscopically roughens the surface of the tooth to achieve the best adhesion.
  • The cement is placed on the back of the veneer which is then carefully placed onto your tooth, and then hardened with a curing light. Any excess cement is removed from the teeth. Dr. Ruff will complete a final check to make sure that your teeth bite together properly.

Restore Your Smile with Mini Dental Implants

December 17, 2014

453020193You may have already heard of the many cosmetic and health benefits of tooth restoration using dental implants. However, not everyone is able to undergo dental implant surgery. Pre-existing medical conditions and lack of bone density can actually exclude many potential dental implant candidates. If you fall into this category, you may still be able to get less invasive, but still effective, “mini dental implants.”

Mini Dental Implants can be placed inside existing gum tissue and provide the same support and durability as full sized dental implants. They can also be used to realign and improve dentures, and can be placed in under two hours. For your mini dental implants consultation, just make an appointment with Dr. Angela Ruff at Ascot Aesthetics Implants & Dentistry today. Dr. Ruff is a highly qualified restorative and cosmetic dentist proudly serving patients throughout Fayetteville, NC, Spring Lake, and all of Cumberland County.

What Are the Benefits of Mini Dental Implants?

  • No need for complex gum flap surgery or costly bone grafts
  • Less invasive
  • Shorter healing time
  • Less Discomfort
  • Convenient and comfortable
  • Prevents facial collapse
  • Fewer Complications
  • More affordable than traditional dental implants

Mini Dental Implants Consultations in Fayetteville, NC

Mini dental implants have all the advantages of full size dental implants, but can be placed without additional complex surgeries, and healing time is reduced from months to days.Since the mini dental implant is fixed in your jawbone like a tooth root, it also prevents the facial collapse that can occur with tooth and bone loss.Typically the procedure can be completed in one short visit and most patients can eat normally the same afternoon. Unlike dentures, mini dental implants do not slip or feel awkward, and unlike dental bridges, they will not affect your surrounding healthy teeth. Make an appointment with Dr. Angela Ruff at Ascot Aesthetics Implants & Dentistry today for your mini dental implants consultation. What You Should Know About Oral Cancer

October 17, 2014

78188806Oral cancer can develop in any part of the mouth, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, roof of the mouth, sinuses, and throat. Risk factors for developing oral cancer include excessive use of tobacco products or alcohol and the contraction of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Treatment is available, but oral cancer can be deadly if not detected and treated early.  Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer with 42,000 new cases reported each year. The earlier oral cancer is detected and treated, the better the survival rate. During a routine checkup, about 10% of patients may have an abnormality discovered that should be tested for oral cancer. The dentist may take tissue for testing or send you to a specialist. Dr. Ruff performs oral cancer screenings as part the regular checkup for Fayetteville, NC patients. Oral cancer screenings are just one of the many reasons you should visit Dr. Ruff at Ascot Aesthetics regularly.

What Are the Symptoms of Oral Cancer?

During an oral cancer screening, the dentist examines the inside of your mouth as well as your head and neck for any unusual lumps, bumps, swelling, growths or discoloration. Common symptoms include white or red patches in your mouth or on your lips, repeated bleeding from the mouth or throat, and difficulty swallowing or persistent hoarseness. Growths or sores in the mouth that last longer than two weeks and won’t go away should be examined immediately. The leading cause of oral cancer is the HPV virus. HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers typically develop in the throat at the base of the tongue and near or on the tonsils, making them difficult to detect without regular examinations. Although HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers are often diagnosed at a later stage, people with HPV-positive cancers have a lower risk of dying or having recurrence than those with HPV-negative cancers.

Oral Cancer Detection in Fayetteville, NC

If oral cancer is detected, treatment options include a combination of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy depending on the stage of development of the cancer. Patients treated in early stages may have little in the way of post-treatment disfigurement. However, for those whose cancer is caught at a later stage, the results of surgical removal of the disease may require reconstruction of portions of the oral cavity or facial features, adjunctive therapy required to assist in speech and chewing foods, problems associated with the lack of salivary function, as well as the fabrication of dental or facial prostheses. For all these reasons and more it’s vitally important to schedule regular dentist visits. Contact Dr. Ruff at Ascot Aesthetics today for your next appointment. Dr. Ruff proudly serves patients in Fayetteville, NC Spring Lake, and all of Cumberland County.

Tackle your Halitosis Today with Dr. Ruff

August 15, 2014

shutterstock_137989865One of the most embarrassing things a person can have is bad breath. There are many people that consider a smile a first impression, and when you are met with bad breath, it can make a lasting impression, but not a positive one. Bad breath, also known as halitosis, has the potential to negatively affect the way you feel about yourself as well as your interaction with the people around you. Thankfully, Dr. Angela Ruff is able to help you with your halitosis at her Fayetteville, NC dental office.

One of the main causes of halitosis is not practicing proper oral hygiene. Though brushing and flossing every day may seem simple enough, it can really have an impact on your entire mouth as well as your body, not just your teeth. When the bacteria in your mouth are left to sit and fester, it has the potential to allow the bacteria to grow and affect the scent of your breath. Brushing and flossing every day is crucial in eliminating the harmful bacterium in your mouth that causes bad breath. If you are unsure as to whether or not you may be suffering from halitosis, a couple of symptoms including a constant bad taste in your mouth and continuous dry mouth.

A couple of ways that you can be sure to keep your halitosis in check aside from brushing and flossing every day is by having a dental checkup every six months with Dr. Ruff. During the appointment, she will be able to look at your mouth as a whole, and look for any signs of decay and deterioration. Also, investing in an antibacterial mouthwash is sure to help with your bad breath. The mouthwash will be able to kill more of the leftover bacteria in your mouth that brushing and flossing did not get rid of. If you feel as though you are suffering from halitosis and would like Dr. Ruff’s help, contact our office today, and we would love to help!

Call Ascot Aesthetic Implants & Dentistry to schedule a visit with Dr. Angela Ruff. We are happy to take care of all of your general, cosmetic, and restorative dental needs! Our Fayetteville office also serves patients from Spring Lake and all of Cumberland County.

More Relaxed Dental Visits with Sedation Dentistry

July 18, 2014

shutterstock_110076917One of the most interesting things about people is the kinds of fears they have. Some people are afraid of heights while others are afraid of spiders. Though it may seem irrational to some, every person is unique in that way. One fear that many people share is a fear of the dentist. They may not like the sounds or equipment associated with a dental visit, and it can prevent them from having the dental work they need done. For those who have a fear of the dentist, Dr. Angela Ruff is able to put their fears to rest by offering sedation dentistry to her patients.

We have a few options for our patients when it comes to which sedation they would prefer. The first is nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. With this form of sedation, we simply put a mask over your nose, and you breathe in an oxygen and nitrous oxide mixture. This will be able to relax you, and you will not feel any pain. The effect of the sedation goes away once the mask is removed, so you are free to go about your day. The second option we have is oral sedation, which involves taking a series of pills prior to your appointment. You will remain awake while your dental work is being performed, and will experience deep relaxation. You will need to have a trusted love one bring you home after your appointment, as the effects of the sedation will still be active.

We also offer IV sedation for our patients that experience severe anxiety when at a dentist’s office. We will administer the right amount of sedation according to your anxiety level, all the while keeping your physical safety in mind. When you are under the effects of the sedation, we will closely monitor your blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate.

If you feel as though you can benefit from sedation dentistry, contact Dr. Ruff and schedule a consultation. We want to make sure you are as comfortable as possible when visiting our office, and we would love to help!

Dental Myths Uncovered!

June 13, 2014

shutterstock_152294933Do you ever feel as though someone is pulling your leg regarding a certain issue, and all you want is the truth? Well, unfortunately, not knowing and being in the dark about answers to something can be frustrating, no matter what the topic is. Although many may not know this, but there are a lot of common dental myths that people are misinformed about. Let us clear some of those misconceptions up, that way you can be rightfully informed concerning you and your smile.

One common dental myth is that bleaching your teeth makes them weaker. When you want to whiten your smile, you should not have to worry about the structure of your teeth, and luckily, this myth is false. Whitening agents only affect the color of your teeth, not their health or their strength. Granted, the side effects to bleaching your teeth may include sensitivity and irritated gums, but the internal structure of your smile has not been compromised.

Another dental myth is that brushing your teeth is a bad idea if your gums are bleeding. Sure, it seems like a good idea not to brush your teeth if your gums are bleeding, but it is actually the opposite of what you would want to do. When your gums are bleeding, it means that plaque and other things, like food particles, are irritating them, and they need to be removed to stop the bleeding. Your gums may also bleed if your floss too violently, so be sure to take excellent care of them as to prevent the bleeding from starting.

There are many other dental myths that need straightening out, so be sure to keep yourself as well informed as possible. That way, you are not only able to take better care of your smile, but your body as well!

Dental Checkups Can Save Your Smile!

May 13, 2014

shutterstock_149625803With certain things in life, there is maintenance involved. Plants need to be watered, clothes need to be washed, etcetera. The same goes for your teeth, and at Ascot Aesthetic Implants & Dentistry, we stress the importance of taking care of your teeth, which is why routine checkups are so important. When you take care of your teeth, there is no doubt you are on the road to excellent dental health.

We recommend having a dental checkup every six months. During the checkup, Dr. Angela Ruff and our experienced team will be able to fully assess your smile, and look for potential problems. Routine checkups allow us to see if you have any early signs of cavities, gum disease, and other issues. We will be able to remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth, leaving your mouth clean and fresh.  Though brushing and flossing your teeth are excellent ways of maintaining a beautiful smile, we will be able to tackle the areas that a toothbrush can’t reach. If during your checkup we detect signs of gum disease, we may request you come in every three months so we can take care of the issue before it gets worse.

Children’s teeth are just as important, if not more, than an adult’s, so we are sure to take excellent care of them when they come in for their checkup. We provide our youngest patients with dental sealants, fluoride treatments, making sure their smile has the change to stay beautiful and healthy!

If you’re due for a dental checkup, make an appointment, and we will be glad to help you achieve excellent oral health!
