Have you ever had such a bad toothache that you thought it was killing you? Unfortunately, many people have been in that exact situation. If you’ve ever wondered whether you can die from a toothache, don’t worry – a typical case cannot kill you. However, it’s worth noting that the underlying issues causing your pain could be fatal if left untreated, such as a tooth infection. With that in mind, read on to learn whether or not you can die from an infection.

What Causes a Toothache?

There are many possible causes behind toothaches, such as:

  • Decay or Cavities – Most toothaches are caused by a simple cavity. It happens when harmful bacteria get into a place they shouldn’t.
  • Gum Disease – When the gums become inflamed, deep pockets that have developed can trap bacteria. If you fail to seek treatment, it can lead to a painful toothache.
  • Cracked Tooth – This can happen after sustaining a blow to the face or an accidental injury, resulting in pain.
  • Wisdom Teeth – Wisdom teeth, especially impacted ones, can cause pain. If your toothache is towards the back of your mouth, this might be the cause.
  • Abscess or Infection – Both of these issues are usually the result of one of the above issues going untreated for too long. An abscess or an infection can cause severe pain and swell around the affected tooth.

Can You Die from a Tooth Infection?

Although a toothache itself cannot kill you, an untreated infection certainly can. Of course, that means tooth infections could potentially be fatal. That said, if you ever have any symptoms that indicate an abscess or an infection, you need to contact your dentist and schedule an emergency appointment right away. They’ll prescribe you antibiotics to eliminate or reduce the infection.

Tips to Manage a Toothache

Are you suffering from an intense toothache? Here are some ways you can manage it while you wait to see your dentist:

  • Rinse with warm salt water to clean your mouth and reduce inflammation
  • Use a cold compress to minimize swelling and alleviate your discomfort
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication as needed
  • Apply a few drops of clove oil to the aching tooth until the pain recedes

Most toothaches aren’t a cause for concern. In reality, it’s the underlying issue you should be worried about. When in doubt, give your dentist a call! They’ll provide you with the prompt relief you deserve in record time.
