What Does Sedation Dentistry Feel Like?

October 13, 2022

Woman benefiting from sedation dentistryDoes your heart race or do your palms sweat when it’s time to visit the dentist? Maybe you have an upcoming procedure, but you’re worried about pain. No matter the reason, you might be a candidate for sedation dentistry. You can sit back and relax to enjoy your time in the dental chair; however, there’s a lot of misinformation about dental sedation. Contrary to common belief, you aren’t “put to sleep.” Here’s what sedation dentistry feels like.

Nitrous Oxide

Better known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is the safest dental sedation. Nitrogen and oxygen are blended and delivered through a mask worn over the nose. As you inhale, the effects will take effect quickly. Your anxiety will fade and you’ll reach a deep level of relaxation. You will be conscious and alert, but you won’t have any fear. When combined with a local numbing agent, you won’t feel any pain. Your dental team will monitor your vitals during your procedure for your safety. After your treatment is complete, the sedative is turned off and you’ll feel completely normal within a few minutes. You can even drive yourself home from your appointment. From cleanings and checkups to fillings and extractions, nitrous oxide is a great solution for patients with dental-related fears or phobias.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is a prescribed medication taken before your procedure. It’s stronger than nitrous oxide, so you may feel slightly drowsy. You’ll still be conscious, but you’ll be more deeply relaxed. You may even fall asleep; however, you can be awakened easily to communicate with your dentist. It can take a few hours for the effects of the sedative to dissipate. You’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home, and you’ll need to limit your activities for a few hours. It’s not uncommon for patients to not have any memory of their dental procedure. You may have temporary drowsiness, dry mouth, or a headache, but they will subside quickly.

Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?

Sedation dentistry is a great option for most patients; however, your dentist will review your medical history and any medications you’re taking to ensure it’s safe for you. Often, dental sedation is recommended for patients needing help with:

  • Dental fears or phobias
  • Strong gag reflex
  • Difficulty keeping the mouth open
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • Sensitive teeth
  • An inability to sit in one position for too long
  • Complex treatment plans
  • Low pain threshold
  • Jaw pain

Your dentist will learn more about your needs and preferences to ensure dental sedation is right for you. They’ll help you relax, so nothing stands in your way of achieving your best smile.
