What Are Implant Dentures?
You may have heard of dental implants, which are small, screwlike posts that can act like tooth roots once they have been surgically inserted into the jaw below the gumline. When dentures are attached to dental implants, they are known as implant dentures. One notable feature of implant dentures is that they’re made to either be fixed or removable.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
To get an implant denture that always stays in your mouth, you will usually need to have four to eight implant posts placed. Taking care of fixed implant dentures is quite simple; you can treat them as if they were real teeth by brushing and flossing two times a day.
Removable Implant Dentures
Removable implant dentures are often recommended for patients with less bone density in their jaws. This is because only about two to five posts are needed for the treatment. While a fixed implant denture can only be removed by a professional, you’ll be able to take out a removable implant denture at any time on your own.
The Implant Denture Process
- Step 1: We’ll take X-rays of your jaw and confirm that you’re able to have dental implant surgery performed. Our team will recommend either fixed or removable dentures based on your specific circumstances.
- Step 2: Sometimes bone grafts, sinus lifts, and other preparatory procedures will need to be completed to prepare your jaw for implant placement. However, this won’t necessarily be the case for every patient.
- Step 3: The dental implants will be placed in your jaw. We won’t need to refer you to another office for the surgery; we can carry it out right here.
- Step 4: The implant posts will gradually join with your jawbone. Eventually, we will attach abutments to them. (Abutments are the connector pieces used to hold artificial teeth in place.)
- Step 5: We’ll design your denture and, once it’s completed, attach it to your implant posts. Your new smile will finally be complete!
