4 New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Smile

December 20, 2021

Filed under: Uncategorized — Dr. Angela Ruff @ 6:03 am

Resolutions spelled with letter tilesThere is a direct mouth and body link, which means healthy teeth and gums are important for more than just a beautiful smile. While you know you’re supposed to brush twice a day, you’re not the only one who crawls into bed without grabbing their toothbrush. No matter the reason, it’s never too late to recommit to your smile. With the holidays right around the corner, here are 4 dental habits to add to your New Year’s Resolutions list.

1. Brush every night before bed.

The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each session. However, many people skip brushing before bed. This is actually the worst time to not brush your teeth because your mouth is a dark, moist environment, which means it’s the perfect breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Brushing before going to bed removes plaque and food particles to control bad bacteria to safeguard your smile.

2. Floss every day.

Although your toothbrush is effective, it can’t clean everywhere in your mouth. The only way to clean between your teeth is with dental floss, but most people don’t do it daily. While you might view it as a chore, it’s crucial to your gum health. At least 50% of Americans have gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss. Flossing is the best way to prevent the infection. The American Dental Association recommends using high-quality floss to clean between each tooth and around the gum line each day.

3. Visit your dentist twice a year.

You also need to see a dentist at least twice a year for a cleaning and checkup. Your dentist will remove any accumulations left behind by your toothbrush and floss while monitoring your smile for any concerns. A quick trip to your dentist every 6 months will keep your smile healthy to avoid needing a costly treatment down the road. Research shows every $1 spent on prevention can save up to $50 on restorative and emergency services. You can head into the new year with a healthy smile while saving money on your annual dental costs.

4. Watch what you eat.

Your enamel is the hardest substance in your body, but it isn’t any match for cavity-causing bacteria. It’s best to limit your consumption of sugary foods and drinks to lower your risk of decay. You’ll want to maintain a balanced diet that includes fruit and vegetables. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated to keep your mouth clean.

Keep your dental health a priority as you approach the New Year. Your dentist will create the personalized plan you need to reach your dental goals.
